A very important part of the process is counting the cost (Luke 14:26-33). There is a reason that 2,000 years after Jesus gave us the Great Commission there are still places that have very few Christians. It is a hard assignment. It is not easy to be a missionary. Many people feel enamored with missions but will not do the hard work it takes to be prepared!! It will take lots of hard work and lots of prayer! Your resolve to make Jesus' name known in a foreign land will be tested. Your reasons for going to the mission field will be questioned. Many leave the mission field early because they were not well prepared. This is why we believe preparation is a critical element in the process and we want you to succeed. We want to see you thrive in a community of believers that all are working together to tell people about Jesus who may have never heard. There are 3 areas that will be difficult for the potential missionary: missionary training, raising support, and learning the Thai language. If you are humble, teachable, and diligent, you can accomplish all of these.
1. Missionary Training: We ask you to go through our in-person Missionary Training School (MTS) or our Online MTS. This extensive 20-module training prepares you thoroughly for the issues you will experience cross-culturally. This training is critical in helping our team work through issues and build team dynamics.
2. Raising Support: 70% of missionaries raise their own support through the traditional model (#1 below) as opposed to other funding models. I believe the benefits of raising your own support makes this the best option for most people. Jesus was supported by individuals (Luke 8:3) and Paul said that those who proclaim the gospel should get their living by the gospel (I Corinthians 9:14). Although this can be hard for people from any culture, we will provide you with a coach at no charge to you, and you will receive thorough training (module #13 in OMTS) on how to do this. I've found that there are some really great benefits to this process that I think everyone should experience.
I. Solidifies Our Mission: As people ask us a lot of questions about our vision, we continue to clarify that vision which prepares us for tough ministry ahead.
II. Preparation For Evangelism: PD (Partner Development or Raising Support) and evangelism share the same process; Vision from God, Gather people together, Share the vision, Invite them to participate. (Exodus 34:28-35:5)
III. Financial Accountability & Stability: As we continue in the work of ministry and report our work to partners, the benefits of mutual partnership continue to grow.
IV. Inspire Others: When we demonstrate obedience to the Great Commission and the sacrifice we are willing to make, others are encouraged to respond in like manner.
All this being said, there are other funding models that will also work as I outlined below. Potential missionaries from countries with struggling economies will likely be considering other models. Those going with models 1, 2, or 3 below can have a full-time position with our team. Those going with models 4, 5, or 6 will be busy with work and only be able to help on our team a few hours a week. Model 7 is not available with GFM. We can talk about these models if you'd like.

3. Language Learning: The Thai language is difficult to learn but anyone can learn it if they put in the work that's needed. Knowing the language is necessary to properly share the gospel with the Thai people. It also communicates that we care enough about them that we will learn the way they speak. For most positions, the first year or two in the country will be fairly heavy in learning the language.
